After 4+ years in development, Skyrim’s multiplayer mod has gone into closed beta for Special Edition (because Oldrim is broken at the time of this post.) For a $1 backing to their Patreon you’ll be able to access this closed beta to help with them Edith testing and basically just enjoy(?) having your game break constantly. If you’re like me, that’s what what skyrim is all about. But now, with friends.

I have been playing Skyrim since 2015 because I honestly never hated the game at first. Long story there; but since then it’s constantly been a time killer for me. Not as much and New Vegas, but close. Now I have the enjoyment of hosting a server and inviting up to 63 others to join in on the fun. (Like that’s ever gonna happen)

Pros:
• Multiple players in Skyrim
• Thum Vollyball
• Modding with buds

Cons:
• Broken as can be

I have never played Skyrim and was under the impression that Skyrim is already a multiplayer game. Like... an MMO or some shit Thonk

Wait so what you're saying is that this 10 year old game doesn't have muli, so the community broke copyright to make multi because devs didn't bother?
You learn something new everyday.

They do have ESO which is just a mess of a game in comparison. Better than fallout 76, but still. And actually Bethesda is totally okay with it, or was when they heard about it, and allowed them to continue as long as they hosted their own servers and not use steam’s servers. The closed beta just came out a few days ago at this point in time and has been, and still is, under development since forever ago. I wanna say 2013 but I can’t be sure. But you can find many videos of people playing with the mod, but it’s so busted at the moment as you can’t trade and syncing issues are constantly a problem, but it’s expected. But hey, giant immersive RPG game with friends. A community project that looks mighty fine on a portfolio.

ST has now released their mod to the public, however these are not recommended as they are still extremely buggy and are being updated as the mod progresses. So it’s playable, but barely. You can finding out more here

To make this post more interesting, there’s a small reason why they are nightly builds now instead of continued independent work. The reason involves death threats that involve the police that goes back to last month and longer. These transpired to a moment when one of the main developers, Yamashi, to post a clearly disruptive message basically saying that: “We owe nothing to the community.” Which is easily a very strong message that was motivated by not only his, but other dev’s daily lives as well. You can read a bit more here

Why are people getting mad if he's right? They can't possibly expect some poor lad work on this garbage all day/night for basically free? He can't make money from it even if he wanted to (other than donations, which he probs wouldn't get anyway).

Mainly because people believe they are somewhat entitled to it because “they are part of the community” and a ton of other silly reasons that go against realistic motives. Being a part of the community for well over a year, these people who believe that a $1 donation entitled them to years of effort from other people are honestly the most ignorant and stupid people you’ll ever find. Evidence clearly being in the articles surrounding the ST dev team.

Well...

Though they said all of it goes towards the servers, but 70K+ a year (after cuts from Patreon as they love taking huge chunks) is pretty big for servers.

Yoo $1 donations are like the backbone of the modern internet dude
And no, 70k for a big game server such as skyrim is not big at all. I pay 70 bucks per year for this site that supports like 8 people a day and even that is somewhat generous. Online content creation piles up fees everywhere you step and its not fun at all.

If it was dedicated, sure, however the ST team paid $700/mo (discussed in their Discord server with one of the devs) during the closed beta that supported a peak of 8,611 players and manages pretty well server side wise. The money however is all being stored currently to hopefully be used for Worldwide dedicated servers, but that hasn’t been put into display just yet. Which is why at the moment, the nightly builds are running on non-dedicated servers which requires people to port their connections and host things themselves. As for the expected server costs when it does come out, hard to say as I would assume they wouldn’t blow it all on the best servers that would only last a few months. Time will tell though. Lag wouldn’t bother me tthough as my connection is garbage anyways.
